The IMAGO Education Committee has been working in new projects for next year and preparing contacts for the next Cinematography in Progress Conference to be held in 2021. It is not yet confirmed where is going to be taking place and by may next year it will certainly be announced.
We had an opportunity to talk an interview Marijke van Kets SBC who is leading the Conference activities since the first edition in 2014.
Interview:
Marijke van Kets SBC during last Cinematography in Progress Conference in Brussels las April. |
1 – Since last conference in Brussels last April the conference group – part of the IMAGO Education Committee – has been working on creating a platform to publish cinematography articles, how is that coming along?
Marijke – Because we want the platform to have academic credibility we needed first an international joint research group that would be the publisher. We want to facilitate and instigate the scientific writing about Cinematography. We aim to start publishing first conference papers and later starting up the Journal: Cinematography in Progress. The IJRG gives us the structure and organisation to start and manage this international journal, which will be peer-reviewed and open access.
Now, we have set up the first academic research group with a focus on cinematography called: Cinematography in Progress(CITO).The researchers from the three participating institutions Marijke Van Kets of VUB, Stefan Grandinetti from HdM and Tony Costa from Lusofona have each done their own research into cinematography. We seek to bridge the research fields and connect the disparate researchers with a focus on cinematography with this international research group to:
i) connect the visual and media labs;
ii) train a new generation of researchers;
iii) apply for fundamental and applied funding;
iv) publish scientific output;
v) set up a scientific publication platform (online open access journal).
2 – Explain to us how is that platform going to work? In two parts? Academic research as doctoral articles with a peer review or is it also open to other publications?
The platform will serve three purposes, firstly to publish a bi-annual, blind peer review, open access journal. There will be calls and we will apply the standard Academic procedures to select and edit the articles submitted by the authors. We will set up an experts list to conduct the peer reviews and all has to have the approval of the editorial board.
The second purpose is to publish the articles linked to the activities that we will organise together with IMAGO. For example the first articles to be published will be the ones presented during the third conference: Cinematography in Progress on April 2019.
The third purpose of the platform will be to announce and spread the activities that will derive from this group and IMAGO such as workshop and conferences.
3 – Explain how does that peer review works?
It is blind peer review. That means that when an author submits an article and the editorial board seems it acceptable it will then be send out to expert in this field with the authors name removed. The experts will give comments and remarks to the editorial board which then in turn will recommend changes or accept the paper to be published in the journal.
4 – When is it planned to have the platform online?
We would love to have the first conference papers online this year, 2019. We hope to start publishing the journal, first edition the beginning of 2020.
5 – Are there any other conference being prepared? Or any other event of the sort ?
Yes, we are already working and thinking about the conference (4th. Cinematography in Progress) in 2021.
6- The group has been working on a VUB ( explain what is VUB) and has great news about it.
The international research group wants to facilitate and promote research into the different aspects of cinematography, especially its role in narrative fiction film. The chair goes to the VUB (Vrije Universiteit Brussels) because of its unique link with the RITCS, school of the Arts, which is offering since AY 18-19 a Master in the Cinematography Program. We do not intend to rotate between the participating institutions. In contrast we do intend to expand the amount of the participating institutions. Our network is big and international, this IJRG-CITO is the first step towards a bigger and broader research group. The great advantage of having established this group is that we can apply for funding and seek novel ways to talk, write and share our knowledge of cinematography. A key objective is to build a bridge between film practice and film studies. The argument for tapping into the knowledge of cinematographers lies in the simple fact that since the existence of cinema, cinematographers, or cameramen as they were first known, were always there. Cinematographers have been there since the inception of the motion pictures.
With CITO we want to develop a new and well-connected international research platform, that will offer an opportunity to attract and train the next generation of researchers (pre-doc and post-doc level) in Cinematography.
