The ”I of The Lens” Photo Exhibition, a unique showcase of cinematographers, has concluded its remarkable appearance at the 2024 Euro Cine Expo in Munich, held from June 27-29. Curated by Vika Safrigina and Susanna Kraus, this extraordinary exhibition featured stunning black and white portraits created with the IMAGO Camera, the world’s only analogue, large-format camera designed for life-sized, self-portraits.
The exhibition, which was a collaborative effort with IMAGO — International Federation of Cinematographers’ Diversity and Inclusion Committee, SUMOLIGHT lighting solutions, and Leitz Cine, captivated attendees with its profound and personal portrayal of cinematographers from around the world. The IMAGO Camera, an interactive object d’art, allowed each cinematographer to become both photographer and subject, revealing a unique and intimate perspective of themselves.
Exhibition Highlights:
- Unique Concept: The IMAGO Camera, invented by physicist Werner Kraus and artist Erhard Hoesle in 1972, provided a distinctive experience by allowing subjects to step into the spotlight and capture their own life-sized portraits.
- Diverse Participation: Cinematographers from various backgrounds and cultures participated, showcasing the diversity and inclusion within the filmmaking community.
- Artistic Expression: The self-portraits highlighted the personal and professional facets of the cinematographers, offering a rare glimpse into their inner worlds.
Attendees praised the innovative approach and the emotional depth captured in the portraits. The exhibition was noted for its ability to transcend traditional photography and offer a new way of self-expression for cinematographers.
The success of ”I of The Lens” at the Euro Cine Expo underscores the importance of celebrating the creative minds behind the camera. By turning the lens on themselves, these cinematographers have shared a piece of their essence with the world, creating an unforgettable experience for all who attended.
