It is with deep sadness that IMAGO – International Federation of Cinematographers announces the passing of our esteemed former president, Andreas Fischer-Hansen.
Born in Copenhagen in 1941, Andreas had a distinguished career in cinematography spanning several decades. After studying philosophy at the University of Copenhagen and training as a commercial still photographer, he graduated from the National Film School of Denmark as a cinematographer in 1971. Throughout his career, Andreas worked on numerous features, short fiction films, and documentaries.
Andreas made significant contributions to cinematography education, serving as Head of the Department of Cinematography at The National Film School of Denmark and at the Baltic Film and Media School, Tallinn University, Estonia.
His impact on our organization was profound. Andreas Fischer-Hansen, DFF took over the presidency of IMAGO in an economically critical phase and in this function he succeeded not only in bringing about a sustainable consolidation, but also in setting the course for the future of our organization. Under his leadership, IMAGO established important committees and rose to become a recognized player at the international level.
In recognition of his contributions, Andreas was named an Honorary Member of IMAGO in 2009. He also received honorary memberships from Tallinn University in 2016 and the Danish Association of Cinematographers (DFF) in 2017 and recently from the Austrian Association of Cinematographers (AAC).
Beyond his work behind the camera, Andreas co-founded the production company NORDFILM in 1989 and co-edited two significant publications on cinematography.
Andreas Fischer-Hansen’s wisdom, commitment, and passion for cinematography have left an indelible mark on our field. He will be deeply missed, but his legacy will continue to inspire cinematographers around the world.
