IMAGO, together with other artists’ associations, has repeatedly demanded in Brussels that self-employed people should not be subject to antitrust law. The reason for this is their economic weakness and the resulting lack of contractual freedom. They are therefore not entrepreneurs in the usual sense, but dependent on their clients as well as employees, but without any protection under labor law. This affects many cinematographers, especially those working in documentaries and for TV stations.
The push by the EU Commission to enable them to collectively negotiate minimum fees is therefore an important step towards improving the working conditions of these colleagues. The IMAGO Working Conditions Committee welcomes this initiative and has sent this statement to Brussels.
