With Gabriel Bauer we have to say goodbye to a piece of film history today.
The only Austrian to win 3 Oscars for his work, Bauer and cinematographer Walter Kindler founded the production company Moviegroup in Vienna in 1969, which specialized in commercials and film dubbing. In the 1970’s Bauer developed the Moviecam, which set completely new standards in cinema technology and was used in numerous Hollywood productions. The cameras won a technology Oscar in 1988, 1994 and 2000 respectively. The jury’s 2000 citation read, ”The quiet Moviecam Superlight is an extremely small and light 35mm professional motion picture sound camera which allows the cinematographer to film in ways and situations that were never before possible.”
In 1997, Moviecam was acquired by the ARRI company. Bauer was instrumental in the development of the Arricam, which was launched in 2000.
His work will always be remembered.
Our thoughts are with his family.
